OCTOBER 24 - WORLD POLIO DAY!
This day was established by Rotary International to commenorate the birth of Jonas Salk who led the first team to develop a vaccine against polio. Rotarians around the world observe this day in many different ways to bring awareness and raise funds to end polio now. Some host various events, concerts, have walks, runs or rides.

Erin Levesque from Waddell Mariculture Center was our speaker
The Center opened in 1984 and started with shrimp. The Colleton River is the main water source.. There are 24 ponds. It takes 7 to 10 days to fill a pond. The fish stay in the pond for about a month and will be 1 to 1 ½ inches long when they drain into the river. After they are released they need to grow- red drum take a year before they grow to a catchable size. They can live to be 40 years old. Cobia is another species that the Center has and they have a lower production than the red drum. The first flouder, which have a complicated life cycle will be first released in 2026. One source of funding for the Waddell Mariculture Center is the sale of recreational licenses.

We learned about Flood awareness from Shari Mendrich from the Town of Hilton Head.
She provided important facts that homeowners should be aware of. Interesting how storms affect our area, for example, Irma produced a big storm surge while Matthew did not. Flood maps do not take storm surge into consideration. Properties on HHI are 75% low risk and 25% high risk - the town regulates the elevation requirements - currently it is 13 feet using current data. King tide flooding is another problem and the town has a recorded workshop addressing plans related to this type of flooding. Many areas that did not flood in the past are now flooding during King Tide.
Did you know that just 6 inches of water can sweep you off your feet? 6 inches of water can reach the bottom of many cars. 12 inches of water can carry a pick up truck!! Most deaths during floods are people in cars.

Rick Sabol, Executive Director of Concours d'Elegance was our speaker
The Motoring Festival is a multiday event, culminating on Sunday with the Concours d'elegance which is a judged event. 21,000 attend the event each year, with more than 500 vehicles from across North America on exhibit. Friday is drive day from 11:30 to 2:00 with cars parked at the Boathouse. Saturday is the Car Club Showcase - each club can submit 10 vehicles. Saturday night (which is a change from Friday night) is Flights & Fancy. There will be 200 to 220 cars on Saturday and Sunday. The Concours has 5 full time employees with 45 volunteer managers and 450 volunteers. There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer, however this year is full.
